Your 10 point guide to everything you need to know when you finally sell your home and have exchanged contracts.
Arranging the Move
Book a removal firm – if you are using one or a van if you
are doing it yourself.
If you are booking a removal firm it is advisable to give at
least two weeks notice. If you are booking a van, a weeks
notice should be sufficient.
Hire or purchase removal boxes.
Leave plenty of time for packing. It’s surprising just how
much time this part of moving can take.
Arrange for a professional to disconnect your gas.
Allow 7 days notice for this.
Arrange for final water/gas and electricity readings.
Allow 48 hours for this.
Cancel standing orders/ direct debits from your bank account
in favour of your existing home.
Cancel deliveries of milk and newspapers etc.
Make sure you settle any accounts with your suppliers before
you leave.
Arrange to have your mail redelivered.
Royal mail will automatically redirect your mail to your
new home.
Check that your possessions are insured while in transit
during your move.
Call your insurer to make sure your policy covers you sufficiently
during your move.
Arrange for disconnection of services such as phone,
broadband and sky.
Contact your providers in good time so they can disconnect your services for when you move and hopefully reinstall them into your new home without too much disruption.
Defrost Fridge and Freezer.
If your planning to move your freezer and fridge with you to your new home. Allow plenty of time to defrost both of these appliances.
